Morgan Sindall Construction’s Northern Home Counties business has commenced works on a £13m expansion to The Kingsbrook School in Aylesbury, following its successful delivery of the original secondary school in 2022.
Procured through the SCF framework and selected by Buckinghamshire Council, Morgan Sindall is constructing an extension that will increase the school from six to eight forms of entry. As a result, the new 2,300 square metre, three-storey building will boost the school’s current capacity of 1,080 pupils (including sixth form) by a further 360 student places.
The project has been designed to meet a rising demand for school spaces in the Aylesbury area due to the new Kingsbrook housing development, in which the school is located.
The expansion will deliver 20 new classrooms, food preparation rooms, science labs, a new Sixth Form study and social spaces, and increase the size of the existing SEN area.
Morgan Sindall is delivering the extension using a traditional steel frame with precast floors for faster installation, improved build quality, and reduced onsite waste. Once complete, the school and its extension will appear and operate as a single cohesive building.
To minimise disruption during term time, the project team established the building site during the October half term and has fully segregated construction activities to align with the school’s daily operations. Due to the proximity of the building work to the live school site, a tunnel has been incorporated into the construction area to ensure that students can continue to safely and easily access the sports facilities.
In line with Morgan Sindall’s commitment to sustainability, the completed building will feature photovoltaic panels and will use air source heat pumps to serve all heating and hot water requirements. The only gas provision on the entire site will be for the science labs.
Emma Curtis, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Northern Home Counties, said:
We’re immensely proud to be strengthening our partnership with Buckinghamshire Council and to be delivering the next phase of growth for The Kingsbrook School. The original build allowed us to form a strong and collaborative relationship with both the school and the council, and it’s great to build on that foundation once again.
This expansion will provide students with modern, high quality learning spaces that meet the needs of this growing community. Our team is committed to delivering the project safely, sustainably, and with minimal disruption so the school can continue to offer an exceptional environment for young people throughout works.”
Carl Jackson, Buckinghamshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Education & Children’s Services, said:
Given the demand for secondary school places in the area, we are pleased to be working with Morgan Sindall to deliver this two-form entry expansion for The Kingsbrook School.
When originally built, we ensured the school was designed to be able to expand for up to 10 forms of entry, so there is scope to expand further to keep pace with future housing growth.
The building is highly energy efficient, which will help to keep the school's energy bills lower.
The wider Kingsbrook community will also continue to benefit from the many facilities the school has to offer.”
