Morgan Sindall Construction has officially handed over its work on the first phase of building works delivered as part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s (BTHFT) landmark Outstanding Maternity Services (OMS) programme.
The milestone marks Morgan Sindall’s delivery of four major upgrades to maternity facilities at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI): the Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC), the Antenatal Clinic, the brand-new Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) and the new Admin department extension. The improvements form a key part of the Trust’s vision to provide world-class, modern and accessible maternity care for the city’s growing and youthful population.
The project was procured via the Procure Partnerships Framework.
Every year, around 5,500 babies are born at BRI. Each month, approximately 500 women contact Bradford Maternity Services to begin their pregnancy care, and the MAC alone receives more than 6,000 calls and 1,300 patient visits.
The newly refurbished and expanded Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC) opened in October 2024. The renovated facility includes a new reception, waiting area, four-bedded bay, a single room with en-suite facilities and a triage room for women who attend to be assessed. Women are cared for by midwives and a support team, alongside the obstetricians.
In March 2025, the new admin building opened, housing the admin and station staff of the maternity department, providing a modern and exciting office space for the users.
In August 2025, the Trust opened its enhanced Antenatal Clinic, with enhanced facilities on level two which includes 11 clinical examination rooms, a new reception area and a waiting room for up to 70 people.
The final component of Phase 1, the Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU), is located on the ground floor in the area vacated by previous antenatal clinic.
It also coincides with the creation of two additional bed spaces within the MAC, increasing capacity, to improve patient experience and timeliness of care and assessment.
The new ANDU is located at right angles to the MAC and, while still two separate spaces, the units will come under the auspices of one team, working to keep women safe and well-cared for.
Ben Hall, Yorkshire Area Director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said:
Completing these four projects marks an important step forward for maternity services in Bradford. From emergency triage to day-case monitoring, the improved facilities will strengthen every stage of the maternity experience. Our team is proud to have contributed to a programme that will have such a meaningful and lasting impact on families across the district.”
Alison Powell, Midwifery Lead-OMS, said:
We hope these new surroundings will create an even better patient experience for the women of Bradford and beyond, while enhancing the working environment for our colleagues who care for them every day.
Regarding Morgan Sindall, I can honestly say I have never worked with such helpful, respectful, and co-operative people who have prioritised listening to our service user and staff voice, being adaptable and flexible to minimise disruption while trying at the same time to fulfil required timeframes. Our wonderful new areas are making a real difference to the day-to-day care of our women and families, as well as giving much better work environments for our staff.”
Sara Hollins, Director of Midwifery, said:
This £15.5m refurbishment project to make our maternity services ‘outstanding’ has enabled us to renew our buildings so they are truly fit for purpose for the district’s growing population.”
Jess Jones, Key Account Coordinator, Procure Partnerships Framework, said:
This project is a strong example of how a community-first procurement approach can deliver lasting value. Through prioritising social value, engagement with SMEs and local spend across Bradford, community has been central at every stage. The upgraded maternity facilities themselves reflect that same ethos, resulting in welcoming, accessible spaces designed around the needs of women, families and staff. We’re proud to have supported the Trust to procure a project that not only delivers outstanding healthcare environments but also leaves a positive legacy for the local community it serves."
As part of its wider social value commitment, Morgan Sindall supported the Trust’s creation of a Reflection Garden and invested heavily in the local economy through its local-supplier strategy and engagement with SMEs. The project team also delivered employment and skills initiatives, including work with disadvantaged students to raise aspirations and attainment.
