Morgan Sindall Construction has successfully completed a comprehensive refurbishment project at Broomfield Hospital to enhance and futureproof their healthcare provision.
The project has seen Morgan Sindall remove all Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), install new structural steelwork, as well as hollow rib metal deck roof complete with a new robust bauder roof membrane, and carry out significant internal remodelling complete with substantial MEP services.
The finished restoration has created a new kitchen complete with cold storage facilities, increased medical records capacity, and pharmaceutical provision, in addition to the removal of all RAAC.
To complete the works, several departments moved out of the building while continuing live services in other areas of the hospital. The completed works are part of the project’s phases A and B. Once hospital staff move back into the restored facility, Morgan Sindall will begin the final phase.
The final phase C has now commenced, and includes the delivery of linen facilities, staff changing areas, staff rest rooms, offices, general storage areas for a range of departments, and the completion of the medical records restoration.

As part of Morgan Sindall’s commitment to generating social value for local communities throughout construction, the tier one contractor has employed two apprentices to work on the project in site management and assistant site management. The team has also seen 40-50 local operatives (within a 20-mile radius) support the schemes delivery.
Working in a live environment, the project requires close collaboration between Morgan Sindall Construction, Broomfield Hospital, and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. To deliver in this setting, the teams met weekly to discuss works and how the project team can minimise disruption.
Upon completion in late 2025, the project will have upgraded 4,000 square metres of hospital space, including the removal of all RAAC.
Ryan Liversage, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in Essex, said:
It’s been a pleasure to work closely with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to deliver the necessary upgrades to facilities in Broomfield Hospital. These are complex, challenging healthcare spaces, so it’s vital that the built environment supporting the important work of the Trust’s staff is able to support them as much as possible.
Our team has extensive experience working in healthcare environments, which means we’re well versed in the design and construction requirements of these facilities as well as the importance of being flexible to the operational needs of clinical teams. We look forward to continuing our collaborative relationship with the Trust as we complete the following phases of the project later this year.”
Previously, Morgan Sindall Construction has carried out RAAC removal for the James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
