My name is Abdullah, and I am PlanBEE apprentice and a proud Muslim member of the Morgan Sindall family. Today, I am excited to share my experiences and insights in the corporate world as part of a diverse workforce. The purpose of this blog is to shed light on the religious differences that exist and to promote understanding, acceptance, and unity among all faiths.

I think that life is too short to dispute and argue over differences, instead we should smile that we have a unique world full of differences, life would be boring if we didn’t, don’t you think?

Being a Muslim

A lot of people are under the impression Muslims are extremely strict, have no social life, and live within the confines of their faith. However, this misconception couldn't be farther from the truth. Muslims, like people from any other faith, lead diverse and multifaceted lives, enriched by their beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

In truth, Islam encourages social interactions, community engagement, and a strong sense of belonging. It promotes kindness, compassion, and understanding among fellow human beings. While adhering to religious principles, Muslims actively participate in social activities, form friendships, pursue education, and engage in various forms of entertainment. Islam teaches the importance of balance and moderation, allowing Muslims to enjoy life while upholding their faith.

My own journey as a Muslim apprentice at Morgan Sindall has been a testament to this. I have found support, friendship, and acceptance within my workplace, breaking the stereotypes that surround Muslims and work with the sweetest people who I see as friends and not just colleagues.

As a Child

In my childhood, I attended a school where I was the only student of colour and the sole Muslim for a significant three-year stretch. This experience has equipped me with the confidence to engage in conversations and thrive in workplaces where I might be the only Muslim or person of colour.

How you can help

I believe that fostering deeper understanding can pave the way for increased inclusion and unity, and so here I will share a few tips to help break that barrier of awkwardness in workplace environments:

  • In the Islamic faith, adherents are obliged to perform five daily prayers, some of which may coincide with regular working hours. When you notice a colleague entering an empty room for a few minutes, it most likely means they are praying. So, if you need to go inside, please remain respectful and don’t walk in front of them.
  • During prayer, Muslims prefer a quiet and undisturbed environment. Providing a space, even a corner, where they can pray without interruptions, and being mindful of activities like turning off music, demonstrates respect and understanding.
  • In the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting from sunrise to sunset. This period can sometimes lead to a bit of sluggishness due to reduced energy levels. However, after the initial adjustment phase, typically lasting about five days, individuals return to their usual vigour.
  • Breaking the fast at sunset is a significant ritual for Muslims, emphasising community and shared sustenance. Accommodating this practice by considering adjusted break schedules or meal arrangements for Muslim colleagues fosters a supportive work environment, making them feel valued and respected.

Conclusion

Embracing the rich tapestry of humanity, we celebrate not just our similarities, but the vibrant mosaic of differences that define us.”

In wrapping up, it's clear that understanding and acceptance are essential in any workplace. Embracing diversity and respecting religious practices don't just enhance our professional environments but also enrich our lives. By understanding the needs of unique people from different backgrounds, we pave the way for a more inclusive workplace."
