Students visit site for work experience

We were delighted to be able to offer 3 students from City of Portsmouth College a placement on our Cosham Fire Station site as part of their course requirements to complete 30 hours work experience.

Liam and Robert are both Level 3 students studying plumbing and were paired up with Hopkins, our M&E contractor for this project. They experienced different types of plumbing including hanging radiators, first fix to a kitchen and installing secondary circuit pipework. They both demonstrated a good work ethic and were highly praised by the supervisor.

I liked working on a building site learning different and more efficient ways for plumbing systems and learnt why health & safety is important. I enjoyed working on commercial instead of domestic plumbing and it opened my eyes to see closed pipework instead of on show. ” – Liam, Level 3 Plumbing Student, Portsmouth City College

Lorsan is a Level 2 carpentry student who worked alongside our supervisor from Dryden Carpentry. He also shadowed one of our site managers on a couple of days to get a better understanding of how a construction site works on a day-to-day basis.

Mitch Cameron, Supervisor, Hopkins said:

The students have been a joy to have around the site this past week and have done themselves really proud. They have been eager to learn and have not been afraid to ask questions and taken themselves out of their comfort zones completing tasks they would not have done at college and to a great standard. Being a commercial site opposed to domestic has been a great crossover for the operatives to open their eye to different types of plumbing. I would like to thank you for giving the lads a week on site as I feel this has really benefitted them and hopefully they will go on to be great plumbers in the future which I have no doubt they will be.”

Gemma Rimmer, Work Experience Lead, City of Portsmouth College said:

Massive thanks for setting this up, the students had a great time and really got a lot out of it.”
