Key facts

  • “The Place” will house a new library, classrooms, simulated hospital ward and an adult learning centre among other community services such as citizens advice and a registry office.
  • The site of the former Palmers department store will be the base for the university learning centre, where East Coast College and University of Suffolk will offer degree and diploma courses as wells as access to higher education courses. The University of East Anglia will also be offering courses from this site.
  • The 5,300 sqm, five-storey building first opened as a Drapers in 1837 and is being transformed with a wider aim to increase the number of people in Great Yarmouth who hold qualifications above Level 4 so they can obtain high-quality and sustainable jobs.
  • The £17m transformation is due for completion by winter 2024

Working in the Great Yarmouth community

Making a positive difference in the communities we work is a vital part of our responsible business plan. Our Community Investment Group supports our project teams in the delivery of local community engagement projects. The Eastern Counties team is part of the wider East business unit, which operates out of 2 regional offices, the Norwich Office being associated with this project.

Ben Virdee, Senior Site Manager, is the dedicated community contact for “The Place” and will maintain communications with neighbours and the surrounding community. If you have any questions, please do get in touch with Ben Virdee via the contact form at the bottom of the page with any queries regarding the project.

As a business we are proud members of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which has a Code of Considerate Practice designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements.

This page will provide a snapshot of activities we have been undertaking in the local community.
