Solicitor – Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure LTD

Location: North West, Salford Quays
Office Based, with flexibility for remote working

We are looking for an experienced and talented Solicitor to provide legal support to our commercial function within our construction division.

Key Accountabilities

Under the support and direction of the Senior Legal Team:

  • Review and negotiate Building Contracts/ Framework Agreements and ancillary documentation (sub-contracts, consultant appointments, novation’s, collateral warranties, confidentiality agreements, vesting etc)
    • Provide legal and strategic advice to the Commercial function on tender submissions and live projects
  • Provide support in relation to contentious construction matters including a working knowledge of different dispute resolution procedures: adjudication, mediation, litigation and arbitration as well as pre-action support including instructing and managing experts
  • Contribute to the management of our legal precedents
  • Legal research including awareness of proposed legislative changes and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with any new legislation
  • Ensuring that all agreed processes regarding contract formation and approval levels are adhered to
  • As well as core construction legal work, the candidate should be adaptable and (to the extent not already able) willing to learn and gain experience on other legal matters which arise, with external support as necessary (including but not limited to risk and compliance, competition law, bribery, public procurement, intellectual property, employment, GDPR, property, IT projects etc)
  • Provide risk management advice to the business
  • Prepare/ provide legal guidance and training sessions to commercial colleagues
  • Appropriately manage external legal resource and control of legal spend
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal clients to promote confidence and satisfaction in the legal function; and
  • Support and promote 100% Safe, Perfect Delivery and the Morgan Sindall Values across the business.

Qualifications, Training and Technical Knowledge

Essential

  • Solicitor qualified to practice in England and Wales and/or Scotland (5-7 years PQE, for guidance only)
  • Construction law experience within a reputable private practice firm or in-house team
  • Sector experience including knowledge of construction/ engineering projects from a legal perspective and good knowledge of key standard form contracts (JCT and NEC)
  • Degree qualified

Desirable

  • Contentious construction/ claims/ insurance experience
  • Knowledge/ experience of the construction industry
  • Experience of PPC contracts and other standard forms
  • Experience of advising on and considering issues of risk and compliance, GDPR, IT/SAAS contracts and other wider legal experience

  • Support the business functions and projects by identifying and advising on best practice and improvements
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to work independently and able to influence and persuade others
  • Receptive to learning new skills, both organically and through external training where required
  • Ability to use judgement and make decisions in ambiguous situations
  • Self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook
  • Discrete and with a respect for confidentiality; and
  • Friendly, approachable and professional customer focused relations with others.

What can we offer you?

Legal Services at Morgan Sindall Construction is a small team and works collaboratively together as well as working closely with the senior commercial team. The Legal Services team are in the North West of England but the role is for the national business and there is opportunity to travel to our sites and offices across England, Scotland and Wales.There will on occasion be a requirement to travel but this can be managed flexibly. The role would be available on a hybrid working basis between the office in Salford Quays, home and other Morgan Sindall locations. This is offered as a full-time role but flexible and part-time working will be considered.
