Morgan Sindall delivers brand-new Imaging Centre in Milton Keynes
Morgan Sindall Construction’s Northern Home Counties business has officially handed over the £18.5 million Imaging Centre to Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) NHS Foundation Trust.
To mark the handover of the new facility, representatives from Morgan Sindall and MKUH NHS Foundation Trust visited the site. The visit included a short address from Malcolm Ormond, Programme Manager for Strategic Estates at MKUH, followed by a tour of the facility with end users, who welcomed the modern space that will bring a wide range of imaging services together in one place at the Trust.
Procured through the Pagabo framework and funded as part of the government's New Hospital Programme, Morgan Sindall has replaced the hospital’s previous small MRI unit with a purpose-built two-storey facility which has officially opened its doors to patients.
The new centre includes two MRI rooms, two CT scanners, and six ultrasound machines, alongside dedicated bed space, changing areas, a reception, and a waiting area with a dedicated play area for young children. The tier one contractor has also constructed a new M&E plant room at roof level.
Designed to enhance both efficiency and patient experience, the facility supports faster diagnostics and a more comfortable environment for patients and staff alike.
In line with Morgan Sindall’s commitment to sustainability, the building incorporates air source heat pumps, while externally, a green roof and sedum roofing have been introduced to boost biodiversity and reduce rainwater runoff.
The team also took part in Morgan Sindall’s 10 Tonne Carbon Challenge, working collaboratively across the supply chain to reduce carbon emissions by at least 10 tonnes. The project exceeded its target, achieving a saving of 26 tonnes of CO₂e, the equivalent of heating 13 UK homes for a year.
Delivered within a live hospital environment, the scheme required careful coordination to minimise disruption. To achieve this, the team undertook measures like strict delivery management, dust and noise monitoring, and the use of digital tools such as BIM and Oculo to track progress and maintain compliance to design and safety. Plus, Morgan Sindall used a tower crane in the small site footprint to safely install 15m long large façade panels while working next to strategic public roads and walkways.
Morgan Sindall also made a positive impact in the local community, delivering 25 hours of school and college engagement, supporting 12 apprentices, providing seven weeks of work placements, and contributing 64 hours of volunteering to local initiatives.
In support of the local economy, the project team prioritised nearby suppliers and contractors located within a 20-mile radius of the site.
To recognise these outstanding contributions, the Imaging Centre project has been shortlisted for a Considerate Constructors National Site Award.
