Morgan Sindall Construction wins £6.4m Burton Hospital car park contract

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction has won a £6.4 million contract to build a new multi-storey car park at Queen’s Hospital Burton.

The team is delivering the project for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) NHS Foundation Trust, which has commissioned it following the allocation of £3 million of Government funding.

The new car park is part of the Trust’s wider strategy to transform and upgrade the main site, to improve the experience for visitors and patients.

Set over three-storeys, it will be built on land behind the treatment centre on the hospital’s main site. It will provide 425 additional spaces and include designated electric charging points.

Working towards sustainability targets

Morgan Sindall Construction will be working closely with the Trust to help them achieve sustainability targets, which are based around the government's drive towards reducing greenhouse emissions in line with achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The team will be using ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) in the concrete foundations; a by-product of steel production, it requires less energy to produce and will reduce the embodied carbon of the development by up to 100 tonnes of CO2.

The site team will also be trialling new HVO bio-diesel in onsite plant machinery, in place of traditional red diesel. The substitution can offer up to a 90% reduction in carbon emissions.

In addition, they will be using new equipment designed to prevent silt runoff into the existing drainage system, which will also help prevent muck from leaving the construction site.

The car park has been designed by Gilling Dod Architects. Consultants on the scheme include Couch Consulting Engineers and Couch Perry Wilkes.

Enabling works began in March 2021. The main construction contract started recently and will be completed early next year [2022].

Richard Fielding, area director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “Building a new multi-storey car park in a tight footprint, on a live hospital site, in under a year, is a challenging brief – but one we’re well placed to deliver.

“We’ll be working closely and collaboratively with the Trust to ensure minimal disruption to the day-to-day operations of the hospital during the build process. Wherever possible we will also be sourcing materials locally and working with our skilled local supply chain.

“We’re very pleased to be delivering this project and look forward to handing over a finished car park early next year, which will improve the experience of patients and visitors.”
Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive at UHDB, added: “Part of our plans prior to the merger of the former Derby and Burton trusts was to improve the patient experience of those visiting Queen’s Hospital Burton. This development helps us to alleviate parking issues on and around the hospital.

“We’ve recently completed a £2 million upgrade of the Emergency Department and are currently working on expanding our Critical Care facilities. This comes in addition to the biggest capital development in well over a decade to the Queen’s Hospital site in the construction of the Treatment Centre, which is helping us to transform the care we’re able to offer our patients.”
