The Challenge
Working within a live hospital environment required careful planning and coordination to ensure patient care, clinical services and day-to-day hospital operations remained unaffected throughout construction.
The programme combined three distinct projects, each requiring delivery within operational healthcare settings while maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness and stakeholder engagement.
Our Approach
Morgan Sindall worked closely with NHS Highland to deliver a phased programme of works designed to improve both clinical and operational facilities across the hospital estate.
Phase 1: OPAT Refurbishment
The first phase involved upgrading the Outpatient Antibiotic Treatment (OPAT) facilities and converting existing accommodation into a dedicated medical education and training space.
Phase 2: Decontamination Unit Extension
The second phase delivered an extension to the Sterile Services Department (SSD) Decontamination Unit, including the construction of a lightweight insulated enclosure that improved the segregation of clean and dirty medical instruments and enhanced operational efficiency.
Phase 3: Infrastructure Upgrade
The final phase involved the installation of approximately 600 linear metres of high-voltage cable across the Raigmore Hospital estate, strengthening electrical infrastructure and supporting the hospital's ongoing operational requirements.
Delivering in a Live Healthcare Environment
A key measure of success was the team's ability to complete all works without disruption to neighbouring wards, departments or hospital services.
Through detailed planning, careful phasing and close collaboration with NHS Highland stakeholders, the programme was delivered safely, efficiently and with minimal impact on patients, staff and visitors.
The Results
The Raigmore Hospital Programme successfully delivered a range of healthcare improvements that support patient care, staff training and operational resilience across the hospital estate. By completing all three phases safely, on programme and without disrupting live clinical environments, the project demonstrated Morgan Sindall's expertise in delivering complex healthcare projects within operational settings.
The team were always available and approachable to ensure that the project ran smoothly with no disruption to the adjacent live wards. The project was completed on the agreed dates and the overall finish is of a higher standard than we have experienced with other contractors."
