About the project
Morgan Sindall and the project’s experienced design team have worked closely with Cambridgeshire County Council, AtkinsRéalis, Urban&Civic and the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust (DEMAT) as the future operators of the school, to provide a high quality and elegant design solution to compliment Alconbury Weald’s growing Education Campus.
Alconbury Weald Church Academy Secondary School will be located at the heart of the Alconbury Weald development and will sit alongside Prestley Wood Academy SEND School delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction in 2024. The 4FE Secondary School will cater for 600 pupils in this first phase with enlarged core facilities & external space to enable future phases of expansion when required.
Designed in response to Cambridgeshire County Council’s aspirations around sustainability, energy efficiency and best practice design in order to reduce the inherent energy demand and associated CO2 emissions of the building; the design incorporates effective passive design measures through the adoption of a fabric first approach, followed by the use of low carbon energy sources which will be supplemented by photovoltaic (PV) panels located at roof level. The design includes performing arts spaces, a separate sports block, a comprehensive landscape design which will offer a variety of spaces for seating, teaching, dining, socialising and informal play; in addition to extensive external sports facilities which will include an All-Weather Pitch (AWP), MUGAs, a cricket wicket and soft playing fields.
Alconbury Weald Church Academy will be part of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust (DEMAT) to build on the success of their Ermine Street Church Academy Primary School located in Alconbury Weald. The Secondary School is scheduled to open for September 2027.
