Morgan Sindall Construction commences work on £10 million East Sussex College development

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction has successfully started work on the development of a new state-of-the-art teaching facility at Hailsham Community College in Hailsham, East Sussex.

The £10 million scheme, which is being delivered for East Sussex County Council, was procured through the Orbis framework, which is a shared services partnership between East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and Surrey County Council.

The college, which is run by Hailsham Community College Academy Trust, is currently undergoing developments to facilitate a brand new 2,700 square metre teaching block with science, technology, art, special education needs (SEN) and general teaching spaces, along with various upgrades to the existing college and a new all-weather sports pitch.

The team has implemented a panelised modular system for the early stages of the process, ensuring the timescale for completion is as short as possible. Utilising modern methods of construction on the project will allow for a smaller volume of deliveries to the construction site, reducing the carbon footprint of the development and the impact on local roads and infrastructure. Once complete, the development will cater for 300 additional places for 11-16-year-olds and 70 sixth form places.

The project follows the successful completion of Hailsham Primary School, a brand new two-form entry primary and nursery school within the same Academy Trust, which Morgan Sindall Construction delivered in 45 weeks, 11 weeks ahead of schedule.

Guy Hannell, Morgan Sindall Construction’s Southern Home Counties area director, said: “We are glad to announce that we are in the early stages of developing this state-of-the-art facility for East Sussex County Council, with Hailsham Community College Academy Trust.

“The team is progressing well, with initial works getting off to a great start. We’re pleased to be utilising modern methods of construction techniques that we previously implemented for Hailsham Primary School. The success of these methods is a testament to Morgan Sindall Construction’s continued dedication to providing world-class facilities that incorporate the best in social value and environmental sustainability.

“We look forward to continuing our close working relationships with East Sussex County Council and Hailsham Community College Academy Trust, as well as our wider project partners, throughout the life of this scheme.”
