Morgan Sindall Construction appointed to deliver new centre for London children’s hospital

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to construct a mixed patient clinical services and medical education facility for the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, the second largest provider of children's services in London.

The children’s hospital has seen demand increase and the new building will enable the hospital to grow their services and expand their capacity – as part of a wider vision to develop as a world leading centre of life-changing care for children, young people and their families.

The project is being delivered under the Southern Construction Framework (SCF), a quality-managed collaborative construction framework for public bodies to procure major building works using a two stage open book process to deliver best value.

The new five-storey development will be located to the South of the main St Thomas’ Hospital campus, directly adjacent to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The site is in a prominent and well known location in the London Borough of Lambeth, within the Albert Embankment Conservation Area, and opposite the Houses of Parliament.

The new building will accommodate a standalone ‘Day Surgery Centre’ for the Evelina Children’s Hospital and specialist facilities to support the training and education of students and staff.

The development will enable the hospital to provide expanded clinical services and meet demand within new facilities that ensure the best possible patient environment. It will also provide high-quality education and training accommodation to support both retaining existing staff and attracting new medical students into the profession. While flexible future proofed accommodation will be adaptable to the changing requirements of the Trust’s services.

Richard Dobson, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “The Evelina London Children’s Hospital is a key provider of children’s services in London, and our team is extremely pleased have been appointed to this project, which will enable the hospital to grow and expand and continue its important work well into the future.

We have worked collaboratively with the team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ during the pre-construction phase of the development to develop the design model for this project, bringing expert insight to the cost and programme model to ensure the delivery of an outstanding facility for the Trust, within budgetary and time constraints.

The new buildings and facilities will provide the hospital with a high-quality mixed education and clinical services facility – providing the best possible environment for patient care and experience, and creating comfortable, flexible accommodation for both current staff and future generations of medical students.

Our team is well versed in successfully delivering complex healthcare developments across the UK, in addition to operating on highly compact, prominent urban locations in the capital. We look forward to bringing this knowledge and expertise to bear on this project and working closely with our project partners and the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to deliver this landmark new development for Evelina London Children’s Hospital.”

Morgan Sindall Construction is on site at a number of key developments across the capital, including a major regeneration scheme for Hackney Council, where the company is delivering the new state-of-the-art Britannia Leisure Centre and public realm improvements alongside a new secondary school and sixth form, the City of London Academy Shoreditch Park.
