Bradford Royal Infirmary Outstanding Maternity Service

Overview

The programme comprised the phased refurbishment and extension of maternity facilities at Bradford Royal Infirmary, delivering high-quality clinical environments designed to improve patient experience, support staff wellbeing and enhance service delivery.

Completed in October 2024, Phase 1 transformed a shell space into a fully operational Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC). The facility provides a vital triage service and includes a four-bed bay, two single-bed bays, side rooms, en-suite facilities, a dedicated reception area and spacious waiting facilities.

Phase 2 involved the extension and refurbishment of the administration block located adjacent to the unit's main entrance. The works included the construction of an extension alongside the complete refurbishment and fit-out of the existing administration space.

Completed in August 2025, Phase 3 delivered a purpose-built Antenatal Clinic on Level 2. The facility includes 11 clinical examination rooms, a welcoming reception area and a waiting space with capacity for up to 70 people, providing enhanced privacy, comfort and accessibility for expectant parents.

The final phase, completed in December 2025, delivered the Antenatal Day Unit. The facility forms part of a wider programme of maternity improvements that supports the Trust's ambition to provide safer, more personalised care for women and families throughout Bradford and the wider region.

Our approach

Delivering multiple phases of construction within a hospital operating 24 hours a day required meticulous planning and stakeholder engagement to ensure maternity services remained fully operational throughout.

Working closely with the Trust and specialist healthcare supply chain partners, the team developed a robust logistics and phasing strategy that minimised disruption during construction. Deliveries were carefully coordinated around hospital operations, access routes were maintained, and regular engagement with clinical teams ensured works progressed safely while protecting the patient experience.

This collaborative approach extended across all project stakeholders, ensuring the best possible outcomes for the hospital. As a result, the programme was delivered on time, within budget and to a high standard, ultimately achieving Morgan Sindall's Perfect Delivery status.

Enhancing the patient experience

A key objective of the programme was to create environments that improve the experience of women accessing maternity services while providing enhanced facilities for the healthcare professionals who support them.

Designed around the needs of women and their families, the refurbished and newly created spaces provide bright, welcoming environments that improve privacy, comfort and accessibility while supporting more efficient service delivery.

The Antenatal Clinic accommodates up to 70 people within its reception and waiting area, while the redesigned Maternity Assessment Centre offers dedicated spaces tailored to the needs of women and their families.

The improvements support a service that receives more than 6,000 calls and sees approximately 1,300 patients every month, helping ensure maternity care provision can continue to meet the needs of Bradford's growing population.

Our newly re-designed MAC will better serve women and babies from across Bradford. It is miles ahead of our last unit because it is so bright, airy and woman-centred. The waiting room is large, and we don’t have to share it with other maternity clinics - basically the new MAC is everything that we wanted and more, and it also feels much calmer.”

Sustainability and social impact

Alongside delivering modern healthcare facilities, the project generated lasting environmental and community benefits.

Construction was delivered entirely diesel-free, using electricity and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as cleaner energy alternatives. This approach generated carbon savings of 10 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to the annual heating requirements of four homes. In addition, 99% of construction waste was diverted from landfill through recycling and energy recovery initiatives.

The project also created significant benefits for the local economy. Through a local supply chain strategy, 70% of project spend was retained within the local area, while 85% was directed to SMEs.

Elsewhere, the team supported the Trust's Reflection Garden, contributing more than £2,500 towards creating a restorative outdoor space for staff and visitors. Educational engagement activities included work with Bradford College Future Technologies Centre, support for disadvantaged young people, work experience placements and apprenticeship opportunities, helping inspire the next generation of construction professionals.
